The Taiwan Journal of East Asian Studies has published an article written by James Sellmann, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at the University of Guam, in its December issue.
Sellmann’s “A Way of Learning: Bridging Ancient Chinese Philosophy of Education with Contemporary Learning Assessment and Learning Organizations” outlines his research exploring the effectiveness of the high-stakes atmosphere of education in the imperial dynastic systems of China and East Asia and how it has led to successful learning outcomes. Sellmann argues in his article that China had its own form of liberal education, and contemporary American liberal education could benefit from analyzing and incorporating similar forms of learning and education.
