Voting rights, or the lack thereof, of Guam and other U.S. territories, including the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa were discussed on HBO’s night-time talk show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” The piece aired following the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma, which ushered in the Voting Rights Act. Show host Oliver explains that the citizens of the U.S. territories, while they are allowed to enlist in the military, are barred from voting for president due to the 1901 Supreme Court ruling in the Insular Cases. Video clips from Pacific News Center and the documentaries “The Insular Empire” and “Statehood Voices: Part Time Americans” were used in the show. The piece was published on YouTube on March 8 and has since garnered more than two million views.
