Meet Fresh Forward, Subway Guam’s new look that takes the brand into the future of freshness.
Patrick Perez, director of operations for Nakicos Corp., which operates Subway Guam and Saipan, says that Fresh Forward aims to bring a modern and inviting look to the Subway restaurants.
The franchise launched Subway Eat Fresh Refresh, which revitalized many of the key aspects of the customer experience. Perez says that Refresh is, “intended to rejuvenate the brand, attract new customers, and re-engage existing [customers] by providing a more modern and more high-quality dining experience.”
Fresh Forward’s overall design was to make the brand instantly recognizable to guests and aligning the brand with contemporary design trends.
The new look is part of Subway’s multi-year transformation journey to build a better Subway that reflects new menu items that have quickly become fresh local favorites.
Walk into restaurants at Ysengsong, NCS, GPO and Mangilao and you’ll notice the improved décor that includes a sleek new logo, wall art, and lighting to give a modern, bright and fresh feel.
Subway has also introduced online ordering for delivery or pickup through the Subway website, https://subwaypacific.com/order-online via Good to Go.
In all, the “Eat Fresh Refresh” platform introduced 20 menu updates of 11 new and improved ingredients, and two new kinds of bread. Additionally, the Subway Series was also launched which brought 12 new sandwiches, as well as a new ordering system streamlining the ordering process. The latest refresh aims to raise the bar with a generous portion of meats prominently featured on new Deli Heroes. This collection of meatier, cheesier deli sandwiches includes #15 Titan Turkey, #99 Grand Slam Ham, #17 Garlic Roast Beef and #30 The Beast.
For every footlong Hero, there must be a footlong sidekick. Subway’s journey has taken a sweet turn, taking its signature cookie and stretching it out in gooey goodness to create the Footlong Cookie, which was only available in 2022 and 2023 on National Cookie Day. Another new sidekick is the Cinnabon Footlong Churro and Auntie Anne’s Footlong Pretzel is a new twist on the salty classic served with a mustard sauce.
For customers watching their carb count, Subway’s Refresh has you on the top of its priority list with an all-new lineup of wraps: #42 Homestyle Chicken Salad, #45 Honey Mustard Chicken and #40 Turkey, Bacon & Avocado. There’s one more wrap that caters to those preferring an all-veggie option: the #49 Cali Caprese wrap has BelGioioso fresh mozzarella and avocado, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, and roasted garlic aioli splashed with the parmesan vinaigrette. These new wraps are served on a lavash-style flatbread – Subway’s first new bread option in three years. Inspired by Middle Eastern cuisine, Subway’s new lavash-style flatbread has a soft texture that holds enough veggie and protein goodness and offers customers a footlong protein portion in a six-inch size.
As Subway Guam continues to innovate and refresh its offerings, customers can look forward to a dining experience that’s not only modern and inviting but also refreshingly satisfying.
Team Subway
Many of the Subway employees have been with the company for years. These are their thoughts — and their favorite sandwiches.
Patrick Perez started in January 2020 as the director of operations for Nakicos Corp. which operates Subway Restaurants Guam and Saipan. In 2022, he took on support office responsibilities for the Subway brand in Guam and Saipan, and Subway restaurants in military bases in Japan and the Marshall Islands, which he frequents on a quarterly basis.
One thing that Subway offers that other quick service restaurants do not, is the number of opportunities that are available, Perez says. “What stands out is the potential for growth within the company,” he says. “Subway has a strong culture of promoting from within, and I’ve seen many examples of team members moving up through the ranks – from sandwich artists to managerial roles and beyond.”
His favorite sandwich: Subway Club and Seafood Sensation (mixed with tuna)
Jackie Ontimara Lucero started in 2000 as a sandwich artist and rose through the ranks to general manager in 2021. Her responsibilities include restaurants in both Guam and Saipan.
Lucero appreciates the company’s welcoming and inviting atmosphere which she feels is unique to the brand. “[Subway] is not only a comfortable place to work, but to eat,” she says.
Her favorite sandwich: Turkey Bacon
Marita “Mayette” Sunga came to work for Subway in 2001 and is the senior operations manager for Nakicos Corp.
Sunga says it is the love of her work that keeps her going. “If you love your work, it’s like playing, it’s like you’re not working,” she said. Adding on to that, her staff and employees help make her job feel less like work and more like being with an extension of her family.
Her favorite sandwich: Tuna
Originally from the Philippines, Meneses was recruited to work for Subway in 2002. She worked her way up to operations manager and oversees both the Mangilao and Barrigada Heights restaurants.
For Meneses, Subway is extremely accommodating to her schedule and Meneses says she feels right at home with the company. “[The Subway team] is very helpful,” she says. “I’ve tried working double jobs before; it was okay, but I’ve stayed with [Subway] because I’m comfortable already.”
Her favorite sandwich: Anything with Grilled Chicken Strips
Donna Flores started her career as a sandwich artist. After about 10 years she was offered the supervisor position, which she accepted. In 2020 she was asked to step up again, this time to the general manager position. Today, she manages two Subway restaurants at Andersen Airforce Base and Camp Blaz.
“I had little kids when I first started. Management was very understanding and accommodated that schedule,” she says. That’s one of the lessons in management that has taken with her and has helped her reduce and keep turnover rates low in her two shops. To young people who are looking for a job, she gives this advice: “Find a job you enjoy, be honest, and work with your team. In most jobs you will make many friends but when you have a team working with you, it’s like a family.”
Her favorite sandwich: Seafood Sensation
Releen George has been the operations manager for Subway’s Airport Mobil location for just under a year but had started working for the company in 2010.
One of the biggest takeaways George has had over the eight years is the importance of building a good relationship with her customers. A product of that is her regular customers. George says she and her staff know their orders without them asking. “Once they enter the door, they don’t need to talk to us. We already know what they want,” George says. “I wanted to build a relationship where the customer service is really good.”
Her favorite sandwich: Steak and Egg Breakfast Sandwich
Venus Castor started with Subway in 2012, wanting to try something different from her office job. In 2022 she became an operations manager for the Mangilao location and then moved on to the Yigo restaurant.
Castor says she enjoys meeting new people and not being able to tell what each day will bring. Moreover, Castor says it is a rewarding feeling when she is working on a customer’s order. “It’s fun doing our job,” she says. “Making a sandwich is like an art.”
Her favorite sandwich: Anything with Rotisserie Chicken
