Globally, what design trends are hot this year?
Simple, clean and user-friendly Web designs are the trend. It is all about functionality. Mobile-capable Web sites are hot. What are some of the trends you see cropping up in local Web design?
Online direct marketing allows businesses to develop a one-on-one relationship with their customers. Web sites have long been used as a vehicle to build databases for consumer retention programs, but instead of sending out printed mailers to post office boxes, you’ll typically see them in your e-mail inboxes and mobile phones now. Trends come and go, but I think this medium is here to stay.
Whose work do you admire among other local Web designers and agencies?
I’m iCON’s biggest fan. They are true pioneers in the industry and have carved out a niche for themselves in this market. I believe we started our companies around the same time and we’ve partnered on different projects throughout the years.

The more popular design styles use grungy, artsy graphics with distressed edges and fonts.

How do you envision the future of local Web design?
I wouldn’t have answered this on target ten years ago, but I’ll give it a shot. The future of local Web design is very exciting. iCON anticipates a continuous merging of technologies.
In the near future, more and more sites will co-exist with wireless handheld devices.
I also envision e-commerce taking more advantage of wireless facilitation, and I see the global site competition get heated when it comes to search engine optimization and marketing.
